Kali River is like a lifeline of Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, which is about 100 km form Belgaum, Karnataka. At downstream Kali, the effluents from Westcoast Paper Mill have made the water murky and dirty, making it an ideal habitat for crocodiles. A walk along the river bank to track crocodiles is exciting. A sharp eye could catch the stone-like animals floating in the water. If the sun is not too hot, they’ll be idling on the rocks in the river or on the banks. As a bonus, there are many birds to watch, in the water as well as on the trees.

The forest dept is planning to start an official crocodile trail using boats. But our guide said these shy creatures just disappear into the water on a slight movement or sound.
